Let’s Build the Barracks- Half Term at The Keep Military Museum!

Come along this half term and help our Victorian soldiers build the brand new barracks! Travel back to 1879 and help Captain Jobberns build a brand new home for the Dorsetshire Regiment.

This new children’s trail will guide you around our Grade II listed building, once the Depot of Dorchester’s military barracks, and get you building a brand new home for the Dorsets. Learn about the Victorian Military, and the Victorian architecture across Dorchester. Don’t miss a chance to see the town from above from our roof top terrace, giving you the only view across the Victorian town from above!

Our Let’s Build the Barracks trail is included in the price of admission.

Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair: Sunday 4th June, 10am-4:30pm

Join us on Sunday 4th of June for Dorchester’s Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair

With activities for all the family exploring the Victorian Military, Thomas Hardy and the military, and see Victorian Dorchester from above on our rooftop terrace!

All activities are included in the price of admission, and we look forward to seeing you!

Shire Hall Youth Pride: Saturday 10th June, 10am-4pm

The Keep Military Museum Young Historians are thrilled to be supporting Shire Hall’s Youth Pride!

Shire Hall Museum will be open for FREE* on Saturday 10th June. Visitors to Dorset Youth Pride will have the opportunity to take part in a range of inclusive activities whilst exploring one of Dorchester’s most historic buildings.

  • Vinyl Van hosting ‘Pride Pick & Mix’ – take over the Vinyl Van decks and play some Pride anthems
  • The Young Historians from Keep Military Museum with their display ‘Queer Was Always Here’- exploring LGBT+ figures throughout history
  • An interactive trail throughout Shire Hall Museum, including the historic cells and courtroom
  • Brilliant and informative stalls from Space Youth ProjectPop’n’Olly , Dorset Youth Association , Dorset Police and more
  • Opportunities to share your favourite LGBT+ films, books and music recommendations
  • Learn more about LGBT+ history with informative talks and additional information

Armed Forces Day 2023: FREE OPEN DAY! 24th June, 10am-4:30pm

Join us at The Keep Military Museum on the 24th of June to celebrate Armed Forces Day 2023, with FREE admission to the Museum!

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. There are many ways for people, communities and organisations across the country to show their support.

Come along from 10am-4:30pm, with children’s activities, displays, information stalls and free access to the museum galleries, as well as our rooftop terrace!

Wessex Military History Group – The MULBERRY Harbours 1944 (Via zoom and in person)

The Wessex Military History Group meets via zoom and in person during the last week of every month.

June’s online Zoom talk is titled “The MULBERRY Harbours 1944”. The same talk will be given in person at The Keep Military Museum Library at 6:30pm.

Covering the use of the artificial harbours designed and utilised during World War 2 to protect British ships following the D-day Landings, known as Mulberry Harbours.
