The mystery object this week was a 30” black, metal Roman Numeral taken from the Cloth Hall clock, Ypres, Belgium. This was picked up by Major R Ewart Cree, Royal Army Medical Corps in 1917.

One of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages, the Cloth Hall, Ypres, served as the main market for the city’s cloth industry. The original structure erected in 1304 was left in ruins following artillery fire during World War I.

Between 1933 and 1967 the hall was reconstructed and now houses the Flanders Field Museum; http://www.inflandersfields.be/en
