The Trust was originally set up to support the TA in Hampshire to enhance efficiency of the volunteers, etc.. Today the Trust's focus of activity is C (Duke of Connaught's Own, PWRR) Company, The Royal Rifle Volunteers. Recently, however, they have expanded their activities to include units that recruit in the counties of Dorset, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

The historical linkage started with The 3rd Hampshire Volunteer Battalion in 1860 which in 1908 became the 6th (Duke of Connaught Own) Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment. In 1938 they were split to become two Anti-Tank Regiments TA and then in 1948 they were merged back into a single Anti-Tank Regiment. They then became a light Regiment RA TA, then a Field Regiment RA TA and following the 1967 defence review, they became B Company, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Territorials and were promptly reduced to a cadre in 1969. So they remained until 1971, when they became A (DCO) Company, 2nd Battalion, The Wessex Regiment, in 1992 they became C (DCO) Company, 6th/7th Battalion, The Princess of Wales's Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshire's) and, finally, in 1999, C (Duke of Connaught's Own, PWRR) Company, The Royal Rifle Volunteers.
