Research

The Keep Military Museums offers a research service aimed primarily at family historians. 

Please contact the Curator for commercial  research enquiries or regarding any information which will be published in the public domain.

If you are a student at a UK Univeristy or 6th Form  and you wish to carry out research for a dissertation, please email us to discuss your requirements. We will normally waive our fee.

Submitting a Request

Please  submit your request in writing.  Either email your request to info@keepmilitarymuseum.org  or write to us at: The Keep Military Museum, Barrack Road, Dorchester, DT1 1RN.

If contacting us by email please also include your postal address and a telephone number.

We are unable to accept research requests over the telephone

You will need to provide the name, rank, Regiment, Battalion and approximate service dates of your soldier .  Rough dates of birth and place of birth are also useful.  If you do not know his Battalion and dates of service, please tell us if you know where he served,  or any places or battles he may have mentioned. This information may help us help you.  If you have any service records  please send copies with your enquiry. We can help you interpret them and they may help us give you more relevant information. It is very important to tell us what resources you have already researched yourself.

Charges

A £15 administration fee which covers the first hour of research applies to most queries and must be paid in advance.

Further research is chargeable but our researcher will contact you to discuss this and give you a quote.

A separate £2 fee is applied to each photograph copied  whether emailed, printed or copied onto CD.

Please note that the £15 administration fee is non-refundable so it is important that you read our research guidelines before sending in payment. We cannot guarantee that every search will be successful.

How We Can Help

Fees for research are levied on a not-for-profit basis and are used to fund the conservation and maintenance of the museum and its archives, as well as covering costs incurred. The charge for an initial enquiry is £15.00 which must be paid in advance. This is based on one hour of research for relevant information and the preparation of a helpful and if possible informative response. If our researcher thinks that additional work is necessary he or she  will contact you with a quotation for further research.

Please allow between 2 - 8 weeks for a reply.  We try to reply as quickly as possible but it does depend on how busy our researchers are and how easy it is to find the information you seek.

Personal Visits

We can sometimes arrange a personal visit if we hold a lot of relevant information but our archives and library are not open to the public so visitors need to be accompanied by a researcher. Appointments are normally made for a Wednesday (Dorset) or a Thursday morning (Devon).  Please contact us at least 2 weeks in advance to arrange this. We may advise a written reply if we feel that we do not have sufficient information to justify an archive visit. Archive visits are charged at £30 and can last between 1 and 3 hours.
