Gas Rattles were used in both World Wars to warn of gas attack, this is a WW2 ARP example from the Keep Military Museum collection. The original design dates to the 18th Century when it was used as a bird scarer. Following WW2 large numbers of Gas Rattles were sold off, suitably painted in team colours, and taken to football matches. I don’t think you could get away with that these days, as it is heavy enough to be used as an offensive weapon.
