Elandslaagte was the last cause for celebration for a long while. On the 24th October the Battalion were involved in the Battle of Reitfontein and "were engaged in snipe shooting for 5 hours". General Jacson refers to the death of Private Winsor during this time - "the first man in the Regiment killed in the war, shot through the heart by a stray bullet". On the 26th, Major-General Yule's force from the Dundee Garrison also withdrew into Ladysmith, having been forced to leave their kit, their tents and, controversially, all their wounded behind. Bandsman Tommy Alsford of the 1st Devons noted that the Dublin Fusiliers "were completely done in" and grateful to the Devonshires for feeding them their first proper meal for days.
