Two quiet days followed in Ladysmith, although it was known the Boers were drawing closer. At 3am on 30th October "the whole army" (Jacson) was ordered out to fight at 'The Battle of Farquhar's Farm" (Lombard's Kop) which was a complete disaster. The Boers attacked in darkness, the gun mules stampeded and were captured by the Boers. Half the Devon's were left to bring up the rear of the retreat back into Ladysmith. The other half remained on Limit Hill, as a defensive, covering force under Major Curry. At 9am the next morning, Curry's force was ordered to return to Ladysmith where camps were being struck and a 14 mile defensive perimeter manned. In the confusion, the returning Devon's were nearly fired on by friendly forces on the defences and in the words of Lafone, it was a "great mess".
