Access StatementLocation
The Keep Military Museum is situated on Bridport Road, Dorchester (B3150). Our postcode is DT1 1RN for those setting Sat Navs.
The Museum is 10 minutes walk from Dorchester West Railway Station (Bristol line) and 20 minutes walk from Dorchester South
Railway Station (Waterloo Line). There are taxi ranks at both stations. Buses to and from Weymouth stop at Top o' Town, within
a few minutes walk from the Museum. Other buses stop in Trinity Street in the town centre. The centre of Dorchester is level
but the walk from the town centre to the Museum is slightly up-hill.
Parking
The Museum has a small private car park in its grounds. There are 13 spaces for use by staff, volunteers and visitors. There is
no charge for parking here as long as you are visiting the museum. We regret that there are no specified disabled spaces and that
it is not possible to reserve or guarantee places. There is a public pay and display car park at Top o' next to the Museum. If
it is important that you park close to the Museum we suggest that you avoid Wednesdays. This is Market Day in Dorchester and all
car parks fill up very fast.
Admission
The Museum has one entrance which is at the front of the building facing the B3150. An admission fee is charged. Credit and
debit cards are accepted. Charges are shown on this website and on the boards outside the Museum. Accompanying carers may be
admitted free of charge if their presence is essential for a visit to the Museum. The Museum does not have a café but staff
can direct visitors to nearby restaurants and shops. Cold drinks are on sale in the Museum shop.
Wheelchair Access
The Museum collection is displayed over 4 floors. Entry is via the ground floor and there are three upper floors. Most areas of
the Museum are accessible to wheelchair users. There is a ramp to facilitate entry through the main door. The museum floors are
level and carpeted. There is adequate space to manoeuvre and turn a wheelchair in most areas. The Museum has a lift with automatic
doors which is large enough to take a motorised wheelchair. This provides access to floors 1, 2 and 3. We regret that it is not
possible to give wheelchair access to the roof due to the limitations of our listed building. We do not operate a wheelchair
loan system.
Toilets
There is a Disabled Toilet on the ground floor. We regret that we do not have baby changing facilities.
First Aid
If you need medical assistance, please speak to any member of staff or volunteer who will arrange assistance from a trained
first-aider or call an ambulance. Please remember that the help we are allowed to offer is limited. An accident book and first
aid kit is kept at reception.
Assistance Dogs
Assistance dogs (guide dogs and hearing dogs for the deaf) are welcome throughout the Museum.
Displays
We do not have an Induction loop or Braille, but labelling is clear and attached to moveable paddles which can be read from a
wheelchair. Some information is on CD. Lighting throughout the Museum is fairly dim due to the need to protect our artefacts
from the damaging effects of light.
